大江健三郎の新刊『水死』刊行にともなって行われた、丸善でのサイン会に行って来た。
『水死』を購入したのは1ヶ月以上前だけれど、未だ１頁も読んでいない。
今はまとまった時間がとれないので、読み始めるのはまだ数ヵ月後になるだろう。
私が購入したときの記憶では、確か整理券が100枚くらい配布されたはずなので、行列もそれぐらいだったのだろう。
行列を見てみると、20代と思しき人は、5人から10人程度だっただろうか。
サイン会に来るほど、熱心に大江健三郎を読む他の20代の人は、何を考えているのか、少し気にはなった。
大江健三郎は、書店の一角に設置された机の前に座り、太めの万年筆で丁寧にサインをしていた。
整理券に記された購入者の氏名を確認するようにゆっくりと楷書で書き、その後に自分の名前を書いて判子を押した。
その間ずっと俯き、書き終わるとちらりと購入者を見て、礼を述べていた。
見慣れた自分のフルネームが、大江健三郎の手によって、少し時間をかけて書かれるというのを見るのは、何だかとても不思議な感じがした。
私の苗字は少し紛らわしい漢字があるのだけれど、質問して確かめることもなく、正しい文字が丁寧に書かれていた。
大江健三郎が記したサインには、とても見覚えがあって、ああ、そういえば大江健三郎のサインは、こういう筆跡だった。と思って、それはどこで見たのだろう、と思ってしばらく考えて思い出した。
それは、自宅の書棚にある、『青年の汚名』の背表紙が、自筆を印刷したものだったからだ。
『青年の汚名』自体は一度読んだのみだったけれど、少し手に入れるのに手間取った作品だったので、印象に残っていたのか、もしくは、書棚の中で、手書き文字が珍しかったので、印象に残っていたのか。
長い列を少しづつ消化してい間、大江健三郎はほぼずっと俯いて書いていた。書き終わってちらりと相手を見て礼を言うときを除いて。
その様子は、何かに耐えているような感じがした。
おそらく、あまり得意ではないのだろうな、と思ったのだけれど、それでも、しかたなくいやいややっているという傲慢さは微塵も感じられない、なんだか不思議な雰囲気だった。
他の多くの人同様、握手をしてもらったが、意外に力強い握手だった。
