今の自分には、いくつかの意味で闇が足りない、と思った。
そのうちのひとつは、９０分から１８０分くらいの間の闇で補給することがきっとできる、と思って、最近行きそびれていた映画館へと向かった。
5/29 シネマロサにて『グラントリノ』
私が信頼している何人かの映画評論家が、この作品を語ることに対してためらいを感じるということを書いていたことがよく理解できた。
つまり、この映画について論じるということは、俳優クリント・イーストウッドとは何なのか、監督クリント・イーストウッドとは何なのか、という問いに答えなければならないということにほかならないからだ。
そしてそれは多くの部分で、アメリカ映画とは、ひいてはアメリカとはという問いに対する答えと重なる。
これだけ大きな問いを解いて、説いてみせることこそが、映画評論家の役割であると知っている、つまり、良心的な映画評論家であれば、その困難さにためらいを感じるのはもっともだと思う。
この映画がすばらしいのは、そのようなクリント・イーストウッドとは何なのか、という問いに対する明確な答えを持っていなくても、十二分にすばらしさが理解できるということだ。
話の筋はシンプルだし、わかりやすい。難解な描写は何一つない。
言わんとしているところもシンプルだ。
けれども、恐ろしいほどに深みがある。
……やはり私もこの作品に対して語る言葉を持たないようだ。
少し思ったのは、今までの自分の作品の総まとめ的な作品でありながら、それをひとつの作品としてまとめているという意味で『さようなら、私の本よ』に似ているかもしれないと思ったのだけれど、
どうやら近年の大江健三郎作品に対しては、大江健三郎の政治的主張と一体として拒否反応を示されていることが多いようなので、このような比喩は多くの人には残念ながら伝わらないのだろう。

この作品をロードショーで見逃しているということの一点をとっても、少なくとも私には映画好きという資格はないと思っていたのだけれど、何とか映画館で観られてよかった。同じことは『グラントリノ』に対しても思っている。

あのパトカー箱乗りのシーン！！
少し闇を補給できた。
